Wolverines Star Wins Triple Crown
Monday, October 2nd, 2023
To hit for a high average makes one a coveted ballplayer. To hit for power catches everyone's attention, too. But to do both -- and to do it better than anyone else -- that puts a player in a special class. Mariano Méndez now belongs to that class.
The 35-year-old Omaha first baseman has won the Triple Crown, the 7th player in history to do it. He topped the American League in batting average (.350), home runs (42), and runs batted in (147).
His manager said, "Mariano is not only a special ballplayer, he's a special person. He handled all the media attention with class this year and never let it affect his play or the ballclub. I am really proud of him. It couldn't have happened to a better person."
